How to Choose Your First Padel Racket

Cut through the jargon: the four things that actually decide which racket suits you.

Scroll any padel store and the choice is overwhelming — dozens of rackets, all promising power, control and spin. The good news: four simple factors decide which racket actually suits you. Get these right and the brand barely matters.

1. Shape

Padel rackets come in three shapes. Round rackets have a large central sweet spot and are the most forgiving — the right choice for beginners. Teardrop rackets balance control and power for improving players. Diamond rackets are powerful but demanding, and best left to advanced players. Our guide to racket shapes goes deeper.

2. Weight

Most rackets weigh 360 to 365 grams. Lighter is easier to manoeuvre and gentler on the arm; heavier delivers more power but tires you faster. If in doubt, go lighter — control beats power while you are learning.

3. Core and surface

The core is the foam inside the racket. A soft core feels comfortable and is easier to control; a hard core is punchy but harsh. The face is usually fibreglass, which is forgiving, or carbon, which is crisp and responsive. Beginners are happiest with a soft core and a fibreglass face.

4. Budget

A solid first racket costs around $90 to $160 in Australia. You do not need to spend more until you know your style — and you can always upgrade once you do.

The shortcut

If that still feels like a lot to weigh up, our racket finder quiz does it for you — five questions, three matched rackets. Or browse the PadelClub range, which is built around control and forgiveness for newer players. For the wider picture, the beginners hub covers everything else you need to start.
